Driver’s Knee Air Bag may not Inflate/FMVSS 208

In the event of a crash, if the driver’s knee air bag does not inflate as intended, the driver has an increased risk of injury.

Summary

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016 Ford Escape vehicles.

The driver’s knee airbag modules installed in these vehicles were produced without the inflator gas generant material, and, as a result, the air bags may not inflate properly in the event of a crash.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

Remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace driver’s knee air bag, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin August 18, 2017.

Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford’s number for this recall is 17C11.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Check if your Vehicle has a Recall

June 27, 2017

TO: All U.S.Ford and Lincoln Dealers

SUBJECT: Advance Notice – Compliance Recall 17C11 Certain 2016 Model Year Escape Vehicles
Driver Knee Airbag Module Gas Generant

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Vehicle Model Year Assembly Plant Build Date
Escape 2016 Louisville December 18, 2015

Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS and FSA VIN Lists.

NOTE:  This Compliance Recall affects three (3) vehicles total.

REASON FOR THIS COMPLIANCE RECALL

The affected vehicles may not conform to the requirements specified by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208 Occupant Crash Protection.  The driver knee airbag modules installed in the affected vehicles were produced without the inflator gas generant material.  In the event of a driver knee airbag deployment, the airbag may not completely fill.  Incomplete airbag fill during a commanded deployment may increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash.

SERVICE ACTION

Dealers are to contact the Special Service Support Center (SSSC) via the SSSC Web Contact Site for parts ordering and repair instructions.  The SSSC Web Contact Site can be accessed through the Professional Technician Society (PTS) website using the SSSC link listed at the bottom of the OASIS VIN report screen or listed under the SSSC tab.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owner letters are expected to be mailed the week of August 14, 2017.  Dealers should contact the SSSC immediately and repair any affected vehicles that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

PLEASE NOTE:

Federal law requires dealers to complete this recall service before a new vehicle is delivered to the buyer or lessee.  Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $21,000 per vehicle.  Correct all vehicles in your new vehicle inventory prior to delivery.

Sincerely,

Michael A. Berardi
