Early Shut-Off of the Fuel Filler Nozzle or Slow Fuel Fill – 2013-2014 Ford Escape

FUEL FILL – EARLY SHUT-OFF OF THE FUEL FILLER NOZZLE OR SLOW FUEL FILL – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 8/22/2013

 

FORD: 2013-2014 Escape

 

2013-2014 Escape vehicles built on or before 8/22/2013 may exhibit a customer concern of early shut-off of the fuel filler nozzle or slow fuel fill.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Variations in fuel filler nozzles, flow rates and pressure may result in early shut-off of the fuel filler nozzle, making it difficult to fill the fuel tank.

  1. Does the customer state the fuel filler nozzle consistently shuts off while trying to fill the fuel tank?
    1. Yes – proceed to Step 2.
    1. No – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM) for normal diagnostics.
  1. Disconnect and remove the carbon canister fresh air vent hose. Blow the vent hose out with shop air (blow from the canister end of hose). Inspect the screen at the open end of fresh air vent hose. Does the interior of the screen have any contamination (possibly spider or spider-sac)?
    1. Yes – replace the carbon canister fresh air vent hose.
    1. No – proceed to Step 3.
  1. Inspect the carbon canister fresh air vent hose for kinks or pinches. Does the hose exhibit a kink or pinch that would obstruct flow?
    1. Yes – replace the carbon canister fresh air vent hose.
    1. No – install a new fuel tank filler pipe.
